The "Cleanest City in Mexico 2010" competition was organized by Fundación Azteca, a large Mexican foundation supporting various social causes.
Besides the programs already mentioned, the creation of the Centre for Integrated Urban Waste Management and Special Management of the Municipality of Solidaridad (the municipal name of Playa del Carmen) to give special attention to the environmental needs unique tothis area was of central importance to winning in this award.
The criteria assessed for the prize included the effectiveness of the proposed cleaning and waste management, contribution rules for solving the problem of garbage and waste treatment, and investment in equipment aimed at improving the cleanliness of the community, promotion of awareness and participation and originality in sustainability.
Playa del Carmen is certainly a community which works to promote a culture of environmental care and to implement actions that maintain a clean city.
