Northbrook, IL (PressExposure) June 09, 2010 -- Quantum Associates, Inc recently completed a short benchmark study on the application of Lean Process Improvement in the Construction industry. Quantum Associates conducted this research to demonstrate the potential of Lean Process Improvement in the construction industry especially in light of the current economic challenges the industry face.
This study explores the need for change in the construction industry, the implications of lean process improvement in minimizing waste and maximizing value. The study also demonstrates the power of lean in the construction industry through case histories of construction companies implementing Lean.
According to Willie Carter, President of Quantum Associates, "Lean thinking is a new way to manage construction. Many people object because they believe lean is a manufacturing strategy and has no application in a "unique" industry like construction." The goal of Lean Process Improvement is to maximize value and eliminate waste using techniques like one-piece flow, Just-in-time delivery, and inventory reduction regardless of the industry.
He goes on to say, "Lean construction focuses on identifying and delivering products or services on which the client places high value. To determine what a particular client values, the contractor must effectively communicate and collaborate, with the client to achieve those desired results."
"Some construction firms don't accept waste as a necessary prerequisite for doing business. They minimize or eliminate it by using Lean tools and techniques", says Carter. The report provide case histories of some of the construction companies that have embraced Lean Process Improvement to achieve some startling results.
"While Lean may not be the silver bullet it offers substantial improvements to the challenges the construction industry is facing-shortage of skilled workers, low profit margins, and non-value added activities as perceived by the customer", says Carter.
