Recovering Religionists (RR), founded by acclaimed author of The God Virus, Dr. Darrel Ray, has reached a new milestone, after being in existence less than a year. There are now RR groups in more than 15 cities and 20 meetings throughout the United States.
In states from California to New York, in cities from Atlanta to Portland, OR, former believers have set up their own self-help RR groups, based on a concept similar to AA. Its members are all former believers of most Protestant and Catholic sects in the United States.
âThere are many former fundamentalists, such as myself, who were brought up in strict religious households, but found their way to living lives of rationality, rather than ones based upon superstition and guilt,â said Dr. Ray, from his office in Kansas. âThe RR groups provide an opportunity for members to speak about the psychological injuries they were subjected to by zealous ministers, who believed that they had a direct pipeline to God and who vigorously attempted to subject their congregations to a strict, God-given code of behavior that the Taliban would have been proud to embrace.â
As the author of the mind-opening book, The God Virus, now in its third printing and topping Amazon.comâs Science and Religion best-seller list, Dr. Ray has not only been traveling the country setting up RR groups, but he has also been giving dozens of lectures based upon his book. Organizations of atheists, humanists, free-thinkers, and agnostics have not only welcomed him as a speaker, but they have also been promoting his appearances through a wide variety of new and old media outlets.
