Southfield, MI (PressExposure) February 12, 2009 -- Track and field teams from high schools all over the world will come to compete in Detroit for the 5th Annual Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays on April 25, 2009. Among the participants in this historic event will be a team from the Bahamas.
Robert Shumake is a former Detroit all-city track star and founder of the Showdown in Motown. Robert ran track in high school and college, which kept him off the streets and out of trouble. In a recent interview, Robert said, âTrack and field helped me focus on being the best; now I am giving back to the community by helping other teens compete for scholarships.â
One previous participant said, âAs a former four-year, varsity track and field athlete I was able to participate in numerous weekend track invitationals. However, I have never held as much esteem for a meet as I do for the Robert Shumake Scholarship Relays. This state-of-the-art event is truly incomparable to any other affair of its nature. Not only does the meet host elite competition, but, additionally it emphasizes the importance of athletics and education. Neither an athlete, nor spectator, can leave without saying, "Wow!" As a recipient of the Robert Shumake Scholarship, I have had opportunities that I never thought possible. As a Spanish major, study abroad is a requirement to complete my degree. The Robert Shumake Scholarship will help lessen the financial burden so I will able to experience another culture first hand. Exploring our culturally diverse world has always been an unwavering dream of mine. With the help of the Robert Shumake Scholarship, I will be able to accomplish my goal.â
The Robert Shumake Relays have awarded over $30,000 to young people since its inception. Find out more about this event at [http://shumakerelays.com]
