Turton, South Dakota (PressExposure) April 29, 2011 -- Mainstreetmoments.com announced here today the opening of its 2011 Family Recipe Contest. Contestants are asked to submit one recipe along with a short explanation of why it is of special importance to their family. Winning entries will be published at mainstreetmoments.com and the top three placed entries will receive prizes. Details on entering may be found online at contest provider's website mainstreetmoments.com
According to the spokesman Jim Wolner, the contest is as much a celebration of the important role food plays in our family get-togethers as it is a search for great recipes.
"We are not necessarily looking for the best tasting recipe, but we are looking for those dishes that people hold close to their heart, for whatever reason" said Wolner.
"Every year thousands of people eat Lutafisk despite the old joke that it perhaps does not always taste that lovely. And yet we do it, because it is of importance to us and our heritage. We believe that there are hundreds of other dishes out there of special importance to individual families or perhaps individual communities, and we wish to showcase them on mainstreetmoments.com".
In 2008, the website hosted a recipe contest that was well received and very popular. The 2008 winning entries and stories are available to view at the website.
That year the grand prize went to Barbara Myhre of Huron South Dakota for her Scandinavien Flatbread.
"Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter just wouldn't be the same at our Myhre holiday celebrations without Flatbread." wrote Myhre in her submission. "Flatbread? Yes, that Scandinavian treat my Grandma Myhre passed down to me. Flatbread is just what it says it is flat bread, but more like crackers or baked chips."
"Grandma only made flatbread once or twice a year. I first became aware of the work behind this treat when I was in elementary school. I remember the winter day was very cold. Grandma invited me to her house to help make flatbread. When I arrived, she had the dough all stirred up and resting . The house was warm from the wood fire in the basement cook stove."
