Las Vegas, NV (PressExposure) July 30, 2011 -- RollerCon and SafeGames, Inc. (SGI) have joined together to present SkateSafe 2011, a week long intervention designed to ensure that RollerGirls attending this year's RollerCon - "the" international gathering of more than 2000 RollerGirls and Roller Derby fans - celebrate safely during their annual visit to Las Vegas. SkateSafe 2011 will provide a wide array of resources to help keep the RollerGirl community safe and protected while in Vegas, including frank and useful information on drugs, alcohol and sex.
SkateSafe 2011 teams of outreach and Superheroes (including Captain Condom, Methadone Man & Buprenorphine Babe) will distribute SafeKits containing condoms, lube and other incentives, as well as informational cards and referrals to Las Vegas service providers. In addition, the websites [http://www.skatesafe2011.com] and http://www.facebook.com/SkateSafe provide opportunities for social networking and access to a wide range of resources and information.
Luciano Colonna, the director of SGI and the organization behind SkateSafe 2011 and similar campaigns, said that while SGI is proud of its involvement with SkateSafe, its success is the result of the hard work of the Roller Derby community and their supporters. "RollerGirl Tori Talavera (AKA Injure Rogers) put together a team of brilliant and dedicated RollerGirls to realize and implement the campaign. "The RollerGirl community is anything but passive," noted Colonna, "SkateSafe 2011 is their response to those who commit violence against women. Predators beware: The RollerGirls are organized, informed and prepared!"
SGI has been putting together events like SkateSafe since 2002, when they organized SafeGames 2002 during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. Since then there have been trips to China for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic and to Vancouver for SafeGames 2010, which ran during the Vancouver Winter Olympics. SGI is currently preparing for SafeGames Poland and SafeGames Ukraine, which run during the 2012 European Football Championship and SafeGames London, a month-long spectacle running concurrent to London's 2012 Summer Olympic Games. SGI has two new programs planned for 2012, including SaferSpringBreak.Com, a targeted intervention for those who Spring Breaks, and Rockers Without Borders, a health and safety campaign for large music and arts festivals.
