Warren, MI (PressExposure) March 19, 2009 -- The automatic clothes dryer is a wonderful invention; very convenient and much easier than the old fashioned clothes line! But, it comes with a price; your clothes dryer, whether gas or electric, is one of the most expensive appliances to operate. A poorly vented dryer will cost $200 â 300 more in energy bills and it is a fire hazard.
Steve Gors, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard of San Diego, California, was recently interviewed. He discussed the importance of dryer vent cleaning and maintenance to prevent fires and other potential problems. Steve explained, âThe law states that all clothes dryers must be properly vented to the outside, not your attic or crawl space. If you have a gas dryer, the dryer exhaust system is also removing gas by-products from your home, preventing mold and mildew problems which lead to upper respiratory related illnesses and in extreme cases, carbon monoxide poisoning.â
Steve also covered how important it is that dryer vent systems meet todayâs codes, including being constructed of solid metal instead of the older style vinyl or corrugated plastic. Steve said, âA smooth material, like aluminum, allows for more efficient venting and it leaves less chance of lint accumulating. Optimum air-flow is crucial. It is also important that dryer duct sections be joined with duct tape, not screws, which protrude inside and catch lint, allowing it to build up. Lint build-up reduces air-flow, causes overheating and eventually leads to a dryer fire.â
