Fuengirola, Espana (PressExposure) April 07, 2012 -- The plants we use these days in our gardens are so exciting, offering long flowering periods and a great range of colour, and of course with summer bedding you can change things each year if you want.
The way we grow these plants has changed, you of course can still raise your own plants from garden seeds, but summer bedding is available as spring plug plants, these plants are grown in individual cells and measure approximately 4-8cm in height from the root of the plant to the tip of the stem, this will vary depending where you purchase from.
Spring garden ready plants are slightly larger at 6-10cm tall and should be grown on indoors until all risk of frost has passed, but some gardeners go for ready plants at a height of approximately 7-12cm high and plant straight out into the garden or use as container plants.
The weather plays a huge part in how garden plants bloom, and over the past couple of weeks the UK has seen a mini heat wave; this of course will force plants to push towards the sun. This time of the year everything starts to move to produce beautiful blooms, and it is also a busy time to make sure weeds are kept at bay; they grow just as fast as your garden plants.
Pruning the roots of your trees and garden shrubs will be necessary if you are going to be transplanting or just simply want to cut back growth. Some gardeners want perfect gardens and definitely want to eliminate all weeds, but organic gardeners tend to let things go a little wilder and leave certain weeds to stay, using mulch to stop the growth of others.
Still today many gardeners will grow their own plants starting from garden seeds, they want the pleasure of seeing the first shoots, and then bringing on the seedlings into lovely bedding plants, and when strong enough planting out in beds or around shrubs, and trees.
There is a lot of work to bring on your own bedding plants, and you will probably need a greenhouse, unless you want to take over the airing cupboard, with plant trays. It can be very satisfying, but today many gardeners will go to garden centres and nurseries and buy the trays of plants to simply plant straight out in the garden.
A spokesman for Blooming Direct a horticultural business on the island of Jersey said "our website holds the key to everything in terms of plant types, where to plant, soil type, weather conditions, so many gardeners are getting information and advice from gardening websites, they simply want to be inspired by a beautiful garden and make sure theirs is stunning, we can supply any species of plant, and all orders to the UK are FREE, we also pack our plants well to ensure every single plant will arrive on your doorstep in excellent condition".
Summer gardens can be a profusion of colour and a place to relax and entertain friends and family, a sanctuary that you have created yourself, but first you have to have the interest and drive to make it happen, but just remember gardening is really good for you and a wonderful hobby.
