The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American Football team established in 1976 at Tampa Florida. They are members of NFL and NFC South. The Tampa Bay Bucs (as they are called) started with playing their first season in 1976 in AFC West and moved to NFC Central as a part of expansion team with Seattle Seahawks. In 2002 the team moved to NFC South. The team present owner is Malcom Glazer. The original franchise was Tom McCloskey a construction company owner but due to his financial problems, it was latter given to Hugh Culverhouse, a wealthy tax attorney. The team started with a first 26 games loss in1976 and 1977, but went on to win NFC Central and an appearance in NFC championship in 1979. Among stars of this surprise season was DE Lee Roy Selmon who was Defensive Player of the season and R B Ricky Bell who rushed for 1263 yards. After 1982 season till 1996, the team did not have any major success for 14 consecutive seasons. However from 1997 onwards, they have done well and have been a contender for playoff and won the Super Bowl in 2002.

The team was named Buccaneers after a team of advisory board reviewed 400 possible names in "name the team" contest. It is based on a local pirate legend in Tampa. The team's nicknames are The Bucs & Pewter Pirates. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers mascot is Captain Fear. The logo is a skull over crossed swords and in between there is a football on a tattered red flag attached to sword.

In 1975 the team training and office complex was near Tampa International Airport. The training camps were held in University of Tampa. From 2002, the training camps were moved to Disney World complex in Orlando. A new state of the art facility has now come up near the Raymond James Stadium housing both training and offices on site of the former Tampa Bay centre, which is supposed to be the best for any NFL team.

The Tampa Bay Bucs had their best season in 2002 with a tally of 12-4 . This was also the year they won Super Bowl. The worst season was the first year in 1976 which they ended with a tally 0-14. In 2002 , under head coach Jon Gruden the Bucs won the Super Bowl Championship XXXVIII defeated Oakland Raiders. The team has won NFC Divisional Championship six times ,three time in NFC Central 1979, 1981 & 1999 and after shifting to NFC South in 2002 , they have won NFC South in 2002, 2005,2007. In spite of 14 season consecutive dismal performance from early 80s to late 90s , they have playoff appearances in ten seasons in 1979,1981,1982,1997,1999,2000,2001,2002,2005 &2007. They have won NFC championship in 2002 and were in NFC championship games thrice in 1979,1999 &2002. In 33 years the Tampa Bay Bucs had 8 head coaches, including most successful Jon Gruden, Tony Dungy and John Mc Kay. The team overall record in last 33 seasons is 205- 310-1 and 6-9 in post play season.

The team cheerleaders are called Buccaneers Cheerleaders. The team song of Tampa Bay Buccaneers is Hey Hey Tampa Bay. The team broadcasters are Gene Deckerhoff, T J Rives, Dave More, Enrique Oliu and Rodlofo Pardon and frequency is WAMA (1050 AM) Spanish ,WFUS (103.5 Fm) & WADA (620AM).

The Hall of Famers are Lee Roy Selmon DE 1976 -1984 and Steeve Young QB 1985-86. The retired numbers are no 40 Mike Alsott FB 1996- 2006 and no 63 Lee Roy Salmon. DE 1976-84. The Pro Bowl MVP was won by Lee Roy Selmon ( Played on loosing team) in 1982 and Derrick Brooks LB in 2006. The Offensive Rookie of the Year was won in 1997 by Warick Dunn RB and in 2005 by Cadillac William RB. The Defensive Player of the Year was won in 1979 by Lee Roy Selmon LB , Warren Sapp DT in 1999 & Derrick Brooks LB in 2002. Super Bowl MVP was won by Dexter Jackson S in 2002.

After a 11-5-0 season in 2005 where it won NFC South championship and lost wild card Playoff 0-1, the team had a dismal 4-12 season in 2006. In 2006 Matt Bryant 62 yard game wining field goal against Eagles in NFL history. However 2007 and 2008 tally were 9-7-0 with NFC South and Playoff appearance in 2007 where they lost to New York Giants 24-14 . The coach for last six seasons, Jon Gruden was replaced by Raheem Morris for 2009 season. Mark Dominik is the General Manager.

The team's consecutive 26 game loss in 1976 and 1977 is a record , which still remains. Tampa Bay Buccaneers did not wear the old uniform during "throwback" weekend. However, it will wear the throwback uniform at least once in 2009 to celebrate 1979 NFC Central first win. The Tampa Bay Bucs are also the only team in NFC South to win Super Bowl. The team is famous for what is called Tampa Bay Curse as no team that lost to them during regular season have won Super Bowl.
