The 12 - Meter Challenge

New Haven, CT (PressExposure) May 09, 2009 -- Have you ever dreamed of sailing a real America’s Cup race boat? While it is true that the excitement of the American Cup is limited only to the best sailors in the world, at St Martin island [http://www.portocupecoy.com/location/lifestyle-attractions], both amateurs and experienced sailors can share in the thrill! Thanks to the St Maarten 12 meter challenge, you now have the chance to sail five of the world’s most famous racing boats! Of course you can’t run the full length of the American Cup but this scaled down version is nonetheless as exciting!

The St Martin Island 12 meter challenge was founded by Canadian businessman Colin Percy. Being a sailing fanatic, Percy first acquired two of the contenders for the 1987 America’s Cup, the Canada II and True North I, about 20 years ago. He then bought the unfinished sister hull of True North I, finished it and christened it as True North IV. He then bought two of the world renowned Stars and Stripes vessels. History tells us that one of these vessels became the winner of the 1987 World Cup.

Today, there are thousands of tourists who come to St Martin Island just to experience the thrill of sailing these legendary boats. Of course, those who have no skill of sailing their own boats can ride with Dennis Conner, the skipper of the winning Start and Stripes.

At present, there are four regattas which are being held daily. If you are up for the challenge, go on and book a Caribbean Condo [http://www.portocupecoy.com/team/cicca-architects] or a St Maarten villa, call for information about the 12 meter challenge, take out your swim suits and get ready to sail! Each regatta participant is given a short briefing and history of the boats. The company’s expert sailors assign teams to each vessel and each participant is given instruction on his or her crew position. The sailors are then treated to rum and punch party after the race. Here, sailors get the chance to purchase photos of the competition and other souvenirs.

The 12 meter challenge has been as the “best offshore excursion in the Caribbean” and it has been holding this title for 9 years! Surely, this is an experience you shouldn’t miss!
