The Complete Guide to Small-Scale Farming - Everything You Need to Know About Raising Beef Cattle, Rabbits, Ducks, and Other Small AnimalsOcala, FL (PressExposure) February 11, 2010 -- Small-scale farmers have reason to cheer. The USDA net farm income is expected to boost 11.8 percent from 2009, bringing the estimated total to $63 billion, according to its 2010 Farm Income Forecost Feb. 11 report. This forecast is the fifth largest in U.S. farming. And on February 5, after a torrent of public protest, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it was officially dropping its controversial National Animal Identification System (NAIS). Originally proposed under the Bush administration, this program was designed to improve traceability of livestock in the event of a food-related disease epidemic. While many large, industrial farms were supportive of NAIS, small-scale growers would have effectively been unable to compete due to the large financial burden the program would have placed on them. "NAIS provides no food safety benefit and threatens small-scale organic farmers and ranchers, while accelerating farm consolidation and benefitting factory farms," the Organic Consumers Association said in a statement commending the USDA’s decision.
