One of the biggest success stories in Philippine entrepreneurship is Jollibee Food Corporation [http://www.expressregalo.com/category.aspx?scid=72&cid=14]. It has become one of the biggest fast-food chains not just in the Philippines but around the world. It was started in 1975 by Tony Tan as a Magnolia ice cream parlor in Cubao. This became the first Jollibee food outlet. The business grew, having the Yumburger as its main product, to having seven other restaurants within Metro Manila in 1978. By 1979, it opened its first franchise at Ronquillo Sta. Cruz, Manila. By 1980, Jollibee Food Corporation [http://www.expressregalo.com/category.aspx?scid=72&cid=14] released its first TV commercial and the Chickenjoy and the French fries were launched. It was also only in 1980 when the trademark Jollibee mascot was conceptualized.
The year 1981 ended with Jollibee entering the list of Top 1000 corporations and having a total of 10 stores. The company further climbed to the Top 500 corporations in 1984 and even enjoyed market leadership in the local fast food industry.
In 1986, two important awards were received - Jollibee won the 9th International Food Awards from El Comestible in Barcelona, Spain, and Tony Tan won the Agora Award for entrepreneurship which is given by the Philippine Marketing Association. Also, Jollibee enjoyed more success by entering the Top 250 corporations and opening its first international store in Taiwan.
1987 proved even more successful for the company as it opened its second international store in Taiwan, entered the Top 100 corporations, and entered the global market by opening a fast food outlet in Brunei.
There were more achievements the succeeding years like Tony Tan being named one of the Ten Outstanding Manilans and Jollibee winning the Anvil Award for outstanding PR campaign, both in 1988. It became the first fast-food chain to surpass the billion-peso sales mark with its sales of 1.3 million pesos in 1989.
There were many successes and achievements as the years passed. As of 2008, the company has grown to owning other restaurants as well, namely Chowking, Greenwich Pizza, Red Ribbon Bakeshop, Delifrance, and Manong Pepeâs. It has more than 1500 local and 200 foreign stores.
