The Mareeba Rodeo Drive In Winter Season

Cairns, Australia (PressExposure) June 29, 2010 -- The Mareeba Rodeo Drive In is getting set for the start of their peak season. The summer in the US (our winter) is when a lot of the block buster movies get released for the year, which makes it an ideal time to rug up and drive up the hill from Cairns to the Rodeo Drive in at Mareeba, where you can view 2 of the latest movies under the crisp star filled skies at their outdoor cinema. Great movies such as Shrek Forever After, Toy story 3, Eclipse and a Twilight marathon are included in the blockbuster line-up, which no doubt will pull in some great crowds.

The Rodeo Drive In is the last remaining drive in cinema in the tropical north and one of only 11 left in Australia! It operates every Friday and Saturday night and plays 2 of the latest movies each night. Martin and Heidi Yates have run their original 1950’s drive in movie theatre and outdoor cinema for the last 4 years – it is their passion.

The projection room is like a living museum with all original 1950s 35mm Century projectors. Heidi laughed, “some people think we just press play on a giant DVD machine!” The couple welcome anyone who would like to have a personal tour of the projection room in action!

The drive in still has the old style speakers you hang on your window, although most choose to tune their radio into the ‘drive in frequency’ and hear their favourite movies through their own car radio.

It is a very family friendly environment as parents don’t have to stress if the children talk and move around as they don’t disturb anyone else, as parents can spread out away from other people, unlike being at the cinema.

When asked why they are thriving during this time of economic downturn, the couple said “Since we provide such an affordable night out for the whole family, with children being $6 for 2 movies and adults $12, it enables families on a budget a fun night out. The food at the café is pretty reasonable too, with the most expensive meal being $12. We have homemade beef and veggie nachos, as well as Marty’s famous works burgers, seafood baskets, fish and chips as well as hot dogs, kids meals and the usual cinema munchies. Families bring beanbags, sleeping bags and some even bring a couch on the back of the ute – all in the name of comfort!

The Rodeo Drive In provides a great affordable family night out and something different to do - well worth the drive 'up the hill'. “Whilst it may be considered a bit of a trek to get there, being 50 mins from Cairns, it certainly is worth it when you sit under the star filled sky and watch your favourite movies. So, pack the camping chairs or throw a mattress on the back of the ute and experience it in comfort! Once you try it - you'll be back for sure! Why not make a day of it and visit one of the beautiful swimming holes on the way like Emerald Creek Falls, Davies Creek or Granite Gorge! Mareeba boasts ‘300 dry days per year’ which makes it the perfect location for an outdoor cinema! Heidi commented, “Currently we are enjoying clear star filled skies – although it is a little chilly so rug up nice and warm, kickback and watch Cinema at its best under the stars at our outdoor cinema - the Rodeo Drive In!”
