New York, NY (PressExposure) May 29, 2011 -- The Original David Brand was tapped to do a custom streetwear shirt for NBA MVP Derrick Rose. Yesterday the brand launched a limited release of the design. Designer Rakiyt Zakari was approached in the weeks preceding Rose being crowned the youngest MVP in NBA history. "Chicago has always been a huge supporter of The Original David, from working with Jordan a brand with strong ties to the windy city, to 'having the hottest kid in the game wearing our name' is a humbling and exciting experience.", said Zakari.
The D-MVP shirt features The Original David's signature cut and sewn felt embroidery. Rakiyt renders Rose's likeness artistically with a minimalist approach, pulling inspiration from iconic elements to create the 'D.Rose Game Face'. The title MVP appears above the visage with Rose's name fused with jersey number #1 embroidered and outlined below. "I wanted to create something that was classic and iconic and captured the nostalgia and excitement of the Chicago's Bulls of my childhood in the 90's in addition to making sure Derrick's image was strong and legendary." said Zakari on her approach to designing the piece. The shirt is available in both red and grey options.
Rakiyt Zakari is a high end streetwear designer with the eye of a tailor known for creating 3-d graphic designs with a surgeons precision and attention to detail. The Original David is an underground phenomena with a distinctly original aesthetic whose cool factor centers around it's being a brand that operates below the radar and managed to create a loyal and eclectic following of trendsetters and celebrities who've found their way to the brand usually by word of mouth. "I couldn't be a DJ, so I started spinning threads." says Rakiyt Zakari whose love of music and hip hop culture is evidenced in her designs. The Original David has been worn by everyone from Wale, Common, The Gym Class Heroes, Trey Songz Nas and QuestLove to Vogue Editor in Chief Andre Leon Talley to Kim Hastreiter, editor and founder of Paper Mag. Rakiyt Zakari was tapped by Jordan brand in late 2008 to work on a project that debuted during Nike's 2010 World Basketball Festival in New York, making Rakiyt the first woman to collaborate with brand Jordan. She has also collaborated with the Recording Industry Association of American RIAA, National Geographic, and Amnesty International. For her work in womens wear, Rakiyt was the recipient of The Perrier Bubbling Under Award for Emerging Designers.
