Basildon, United Kingdom (PressExposure) June 06, 2013 -- Michael Lewis, a founder of one of the country's top home heating installers, The Underfloor Heating Store, has graduated from the Open University.
Michael, together with his brother and business partner Steven, founded an electrical contracting business that suffered greatly in the 2009 housing crash. With no choice but to either fold or identify a new niche in the market, the pair showed great insight and focused on an area they had the expertise to fulfil: underfloor heating.
In May this year, the Underfloor Heating Store was recognised as Essex's Growing Business of the Year. Revenues for the business have continued to climb; its most recent profit was an increase of more than 5500% against its first year of trading, which is a reflection of the hard work and passion that has gone into making it a success. The business was also a finalist in the UK Customer Satisfaction Awards and The National
Business Award, and has even been featured on C4's The Home Show and the BBC's DIY SOS.
As both a recent graduate and winner of multiple business accolades including Business Man of the Year, Michael was asked to be speaker at the university's celebrations for its charter day.
Speaking about his success in the Open University magazine OpenMinds, Michael pointed to the importance of a balance between maintaining a positive attitude and having a killer business instinct.
Michael also encourages his staff to follow in his footsteps. He said:
"With the right attitude and approach, anyone can make it in business. But part of our success at the Underfloor Heating Store comes from our dedication to our great team of staff.
"We encourage our staff members to increase their own expertise and knowledge by undertaking training courses."
Michael said his seven years studying at the Open University has been hugely beneficial. He chose a number of modules in his BSc degree, all of which were applicable to areas in his business life - particularly the financial accounting module. As a result of his studies, his confidence saw a massive surge.
