Keighley, United Kingdom (PressExposure) June 21, 2009 -- Airedale Springs Ltd http://www.airedalesprings.co.uk has recently produced a flat spring product that helps extend the life of wooden railway sleepers. The flat strip spring was produced for the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), a preserved line that runs mainly Steam Engines but with Diesel Locomotives too, is a volunteer run organisation. The line which operates from Keighley to Oxenhope via Haworth (Bronte Country) in the Bradford District of West Yorkshire runs for approximately 5 miles.
The spring is used to repair and prevent the worsening of cracks which can appear in wooden sleepers due to wear and tear. The purpose of the spring is to prolong the life of the sleeper and reduces the need to replace damaged sleepers, which can be a big job. The spring is manufactured from spring quality Stainless Steel with a knife edge on one side is hammered into the end of cracked sleepers, straddling the crack(s). It pulls the split together and helps prevent wear and tear further damaging the sleeper.
