Who Has Won The Best Job In The World?

Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) May 07, 2009 -- It was named as the 'Best Job In The World', as contestants applied for a six month contract to be the caretaker of a tropical island, off the Australian coastline.

The 15 finalists, shortlisted from 35,000 applicants, spent four days on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in an extended interview. The finalists were obliged to snorkel through clear blue waters, eat their fill at beach side barbecues and unwind in the island’s spa. They had to prove they could blog, take swimming tests and endure face-to-face interviews.

Ben Southall, British charity worker, adventure lover, bungee jumper, marathon runner, scuba diver, ostrich rider and kisser of a giraffe, made king as Caretaker of Hamilton Island, at a recent ceremony on the island.

"Ben has shown a true passion for Queensland. He has ideas that will make the role his own", said Peter Lawlor, Queensland Minister for Tourism.

However, the contest has not been without its hassles. The website crashed through to the overload of visitors. The tourism department came under heavy criticism when it put out a video application of a woman getting a tattoo, in a show of expressing her love of the Great Barrier Reef. One finalist was removed from the contest when was disclosed she had connections to the adult entertainment industry. A prankster set himself up as Osama bin Laden in a video, on YouTube, saying why he should be the one to be given the Best Job in the World.

Ben Southall will set up residence in an airy three-bedroomed oceanfront villa, with breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and a private pool. He will have his Canadian girlfriend join him for the six month duration of the job.

For all you hopefuls out there, who missed out on opportunity of the Best Job In The World, there is still a way you could have your very own piece of a tropical island, very similar to Hamilton Island. That’s even better than winning a contest for a six month contract.
