Lincoln, United Kingdom (PressExposure) June 28, 2012 -- Multi-Gigabit Wireless Products Move Ever Closer To Commercialization
Santa Clara, CA June 28th, 2012 Members of the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) are to test multi-gigabit wireless WiGig technology in real world conditions this week in a move taking the technology ever closer to commercialization.
The second WiGig Plugfest will run for four days and establish the basis for future interoperability of different products. It signals the imminent transition of ultra-fast 60GHz WiGig networking into actual products realized on the market.
Gartner Wireless Research Director Mark Hung commented: "WiGig addresses the increasing consumer demand for high-speed wireless communication in the home, enterprise, and mobile markets. With the latest WiGig Alliance Plugfest, an ecosystem of interoperable WiGig-enabled products is starting to emerge to meet this demand. The first category of products expected to implement WiGig technology will be PCs and peripherals."
This Plugfest follows the publication in 2011 of three Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) specifications, the WiGig Display Extension (WDE), the WiGig Serial Extension (WSE) and WiGig Bus Extension (WBE). WiGig members are now testing their WiGig-based products to ensure interoperability within the ecosystem and provide end users with a guarantee of highly reliable solutions at product launch next year.
"The second Plugfest leads straight on from our successful Taipei Computex Executive Summit which boosted awareness of the momentum behind WiGig and the upcoming certified products. With WiGig's second organized Plugfest we are committed to the WiGig Alliance members, their customers and to building an ecosystem of interoperable WiGig enabled products," said Dr. Ali Sadri, WiGig Alliance President and Chairman.
"Our vision has always been to introduce a technology capable of enabling new applications and an unprecedented user experience for developers and customers. With this Plugfest, a technology that appeared imaginative just a few years ago is now steps away from mass commercialization," Dr. Sadri added.
The Plugfest is being organized in collaboration with UL CCS and assisted by MET Labs, two of the world's leading independent compliance, testing and certification houses engaged with the WiGig Alliance since the organisation began. Key test instrumentation for the Plugfest is being provided by Agilent Technologies and Rohde and Schwarz.
UL CCS President Mike Kuo commented: "As hosts to this Plugfest we are excited at the opportunity to continue working with the WiGig members in bringing the next, mind blowing and potentially game changing technology successfully to market."
