Harrisburg,, PA (PressExposure) November 26, 2008 -- Harrisburg, PA based nationally-known writer and AIDS activist Frank Pizzoli is moving forward with a statewide expansion of his successful Pennsylvania prison-based HIV education project [http://www.thecentralvoice.ning.com].
âGilead Foundation recently funded Positive Opportunitiesâ Pennsylvania state prison-based HIV Education Program to go statewide,â Pizzoli says. In 1997, Pizzoli founded nonprofit Positive Opportunities, Inc., winning awards along the way, including a Points of Light Award (2001). He has been involved with HIV/AIDS issues at the local, state, and national levels since the epidemicâs beginning.
He recently wrote a piece for Instinct magazine on his own HIV journey [http://www.thecentralvoice.ning.com] that will appear in the December 08 issue. Pizzoli has written on HIV for Instinct since 2002, as well as for POZ, HIV Plus, Positively Aware, Body Positive, New York Blade News, Washington Blade, and city papers nationwide. He is a grant recipient of the New York-based PEN Writers Fund and edited âItâs a Queer Life,â a compilation of essays, poems, and cartoons from writers nationwide on queer health and wellness issues.
His work has appeared recently in Lambda Book Report and White Crane Journal. For Lambda Book Report he reviewed celebrated author Edmund Whiteâs âChaos: A Novella and Storiesâ and published an extensive interview with the gay icon. For White Crane Journal he wrote on the thorny issue of âfriendshipâ among gay men and across the generations.
Pizzoli participated in POZ magazineâs the 10 th anniversary cover [http://www.thecentralvoice.ning.com] and inside story photographed by internationally-known photographer Spencer Tunick. The cover story is the subject of an award-winning HBO/Cinemax documentary âPositively Naked.â Locally, Pizzoli produced and edited âSecond Lazarus,â a 30-minute documentary (with a 10 min. version with testimonials only) on the state of HIV/AIDS in central Pennsylvania, made in conjunction with Cable Positive, The Tony Cox Community Fund, and COMCAST.
Pizzoli is founding publisher and editor of Central Voice newspaper. A frequent coffeehouse presenter, his interactive play "Paradise Lost & Narrative Found," based on the lost dialogue among gay and other communities, has been presented in workshop in Denver, Boulder, Delaware, and New York City.
