Atlantic City, New Jersey (PressExposure) April 11, 2012 -- With Atlantic City set to host such international music acts like Metallica and Beyoncé this summer, you would expect that Atlantic City's steadily growing underground music scene would see a much deserved moment in the sun. But these megastars cast a huge shadow. Atlantic City's own funk rock trio ill rendition is taking it upon themselves to make their music sees the light.
To promote their upcoming full length album and their return show, they're hitting the boardwalk and visitors a free copy of their debut CD, a 4 song EP entitled Bomb's Away, for free. Like most bands operating at a local level, they've got a limited budget, so to be able to afford this free promotion, the band decided to print postcards - which are about five times cheaper to produce than cds, which will lead potential fans to a free digital download.
"We aren't abandoning CD's altogether," Maceo P. King, the band's afro-wearing bassist says, "but they're not the only way people listen to music. They listen to music on phones and on the go."
Their music is hosted by Stereokiller.com, which made news recently by announcing that through their site, artists can sell and give away music or merchandise without the website taking a percentage of the profits - something which sets the site apart from even music giants such as Itunes.
The outspoken bassist of the group had much to say when asked why they have never sold a single record to date. "When you're starting out as a recording artist, you've got to be your own record company as well. When we release our full length, I'm sure we'll sell that, but if we did that now, who would know about it?"
So in a sense, they're flipping the standard model of music sales. Rather than slowly create a fanbase through sales and touring and selling their cd, they're creating a fanbase by giving their album out, and they hope to capitalize on future sales and touring once that fanbase is established.
