Blood May Not Be Thicker Than Water

Eau Claire, WI (PressExposure) April 14, 2009 -- In the Tangley family, when the words “Hey Culligan Man!” are shouted, more than one head will turn in response. Third in the line of Tangley Culligan Men, Bret Tangley is currently the owner and President of Sterling Water-Culligan (, having grown up around and actively worked in various roles in the family business since 1982.

During an age of uncertainty for many businesses, Sterling Water-Culligan has found its longevity lies in its own gene pool. The story begins in Ellsworth, WI in1949 when W. Sterling and Jo Tangley started in the water business. Peter, the son of Sterling and Tangley, along with his wife Karol began their own Culligan dealership in Altoona, WI in 1972 and later purchased the entire family business. In 2008, Peter and Karol passed the ownership of Sterling Water-Culligan to their son, Bret. Today Bret finds himself continuing to live off the same Culligan brand which has served his family and community for more than six decades.

“I have 26 years in the water industry, and my family has 60,” says Tangley. “The relationships built over time and the recognition of the company name that comes along with that kind of extended tenure is priceless. It’s my hope that Sterling Water-Culligan will see sixty more years in this family and community. ”

Water quality improvement is a way of life for Tangley. He owns and operates two award-winning Culligan dealerships in Eau Claire and Rothschild (Wausau), Wisconsin and is Area Manager for Culligan Soft Water Service Company in five dealerships located in Minnesota and Iowa. His efforts have been recognized with numerous Culligan awards and their company was also awarded the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce’s 2007 Small Business of the Year award.

Bret currently serves on the Board of Directors of the national Water Quality Association (WQA), Water Quality Association of Wisconsin (WQAW) and the Culligan Dealers Association of Wisconsin (CDAW) as well as having served as President of the Eau Claire/La Crosse Advertising Co-op.

In addition to his involvement in the water industry, Bret served as Board President for the local Eau Claire Area YMCA among numerous other community duties.

Founded in 1936 by Emmett Culligan, Culligan continually develops new technologies to treat hard water and rid water contaminants. All products have been perfected through research and development, set standards in the water treatment industry, and are used by homes and businesses worldwide.
