The leaders of Team Christopher, Jean Capolupo and Chris Cullen, are proud parents of 4-year-old Catie and 2-year-old Christopher. Their son Christopher, who the team was named after, was diagnosed with autism last September. Mom Jean says, "It was one of the hardest things to have to hear but yet, a relief to finally get some answers. Now, it's all about getting him on track and the help he needs." Christopher's dad, Chris adds, "Two weeks after Christopher was diagnosed we had already formed Team Christopher and we were walking in the 2011 Walk Now for Autism Speaks."
Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder and Asperger Syndrome.
Capolupo and Cullen say that "By participating in this event, you are helping to change the future for all who struggle with autism. You are getting us one step closer to finding what causes autism, how to prevent and treat it, and help families whose lives have been changed by it."
