Could Robot Models Direct From A Sci-Fi Film Ever Replace The Real Thing?

Bristol, United Kingdom (PressExposure) April 13, 2009 -- The modelling industry has seen many changes in recent years, but could it now be taken by storm by a new robot fashion model created by designers in Japan?

Almost certainly not, says Damian O’Connor, Managing Director at UK modelling agency Models Direct. Models can breathe a sigh of relief: your modelling career [] is safe for now!

The robot model, which goes by the alluring name of HRP-4C has a very mechanical looking metallic body but is able to pose, move, and change its facial expression thanks to the battery operated motors contained within. The dimensions have been taken from the average woman in Japan, and the facial features and hair are modelled on anime comic characters.

The million dollar question of course, is whether this robot can really become a model. How many fashion labels looking for a model would actually chose a machine over a human?

“Not many, if any” is the verdict of O’Connor, who comes down firmly in favour of real life human talent when it comes to modelling.

“Even with the best designers and computer programmers in the world on board, I don’t think any robot could ever convey a fraction of the warmth and empathy that a real model does when they are at work,” says O’Connor.

“When a person chooses to become a model [], they bring a lot of themselves to the role and to their modelling career. Our clients are looking for a face that their audience will empathise with. I can’t see a robot face achieving that anytime soon!” he says.

That’s not to say a robot fashion model would not have its uses, though.

According to O’Connor, a robot model could come in handy for particular uses in the fashion industry. Art directors, for example, might choose to combine robot and real models, or use the robot models to help plan a shoot.
