DirectBuy Aims For The Green With New Recycling Program

Merrillville, IN (PressExposure) February 12, 2009 -- To keep up with the green efforts of its members, DirectBuy’s corporate headquarters initiated a recycling program last September at its main and auxiliary buildings in Merrillville, Indiana.

In a little more than four months, DirectBuy Corporate has recycled a total of 21,514 pounds (10.8 tons) — the equivalent of 194 pounds (19,400 sheets) of paper per day.

“DirectBuy has made it a point to make more and more green products available to our members. Starting the recycling program here at Corporate is really our way of practicing what we’ve been preaching,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy. “With the phenomenal response of our staff, we’ve been able to recycle the equivalent of 170 trees—17 trees per ton—and counting.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 10,000 sheets of stacked paper weigh about 100 pounds and stand slightly over four feet. That puts the amount of paper DirectBuy has recycled with this new initiative to be 864 feet high. At its current pace, the amount of paper DirectBuy will recycle by April 17 will surpass the Sears Tower in Chicago, the tallest building in the United States at 1,450 feet tall (without antennas).

Said Shragal, “Paper is still very much a reality for most large corporations. While we can strive for someday achieving a paperless office, recycling as much as possible is the least we can do. Thank to the incredible participation from our employees, we’ve able to greatly reduce our carbon footprint.”
