Boston, MA (PressExposure) March 15, 2012 -- The Doctors Health Press, a publisher of various natural health newsletters, books and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is lending its support to a new study which illustrates a problem with sleeping pills, which further suggests that the world of alternative health is the way to go.
As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin on Wednesday, March 13, 2012 (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-2/new-study-warns-about-sleeping-pills), the study found that more and more people are relying on sleeping pills, a $2.0 billion industry. But it links such drugs to a 4.6 times higher risk of death and a significant increase in cancer cases.
The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article reports that the study shows that eight of the most commonly used hypnotic drugs were associated with increased hazards of mortality and cancer, including "Ambien" and "Restoril," which were thought to have been safer.
The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article also reports that the researchers tried many strategies to see if this alarming link held up, and it did no matter what they used. Even among patients who were prescribed one to 18 sleeping pills per year, the risk of death was 3.6 times higher than among similar participants who did not take the medications.
The editorial team at Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin recommends that if one wants to avoid the use of sleeping pills, to try natural methods such as meditation, acupuncture, yoga, eating nutritiously, and hypnotherapy. For supplements, the Doctors Health Press mentions that the best bets remain the natural hormone melatonin (uses at adoctor's direction) and the herbal supplement valerian root (commonly found as tea).
