Mumbai, Maharashtra India (PressExposure) April 01, 2011 -- Currently a Partner of the well known C. R. Narayana Rao (CRN), Architects & Engineers, a firm recognised for their contribution in the field of developing eco sensitive projects, Mr. Raghavendran's focus from the beginning of his career has been on Sustainable & Environment friendly principles conducive to Intelligent building concepts, much before it became a fashion statement. Mr. Raghavendran specializes in blending architecture with engineering design principles which focuses on energy efficiencies, occupant safety & health, climate & context responsiveness with appropriate technology, making many of his projects innovative and path breaking. Mr. Raghavendran has approached Architectural Design as a innovative, comprehensive and inclusive process. Sensitivities to site, context and user aspirations are the cornerstones around which his design interpretation of the Architectural language has evolved. Comprehensive integration process with all aspects of design, both Architectural, Engineering, Interior and Site sustainability have been given high importance, given CRN is a Multi-disciplinary Design organisation.
The design insights are driven by Mr. Raghavendran's belief that buildings and its setting in the site leave a mark on the occupants and how they use and benefit from the facility. Hence, design for people, place and time are the main drivers that have guided his Design Philosophy.
Mr. Raghavendran has pioneered the concept of pre-cast & pre-stressed buildings using longer span members. Simply put, this translates into a large structures without supporting columns in between, providing clear views and smooth movement. This technology significantly reduces use of structural materials, weight of the building and ensures speedy completion of the project. Needless to say, this has a direct impact on cost reduction and time over runs . Some prime examples of these are the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium both in Chennai and Cochin, Student Activity Centre in IIT ( M) , TIDEL PARK, Chennai and Ebene Cyber Tower , Mauritius amongst a host of others.
The Ebene Cyber Tower in Mauritius is another fine example of his philosophy. It has not just been recognised as an energy efficient building with reduced operating costs, but has been awarded the 'Intelligent Building of the Year - 2005' by Intelligent Communities Forum, an independent Think-Tank based in New York, US, after evaluating over 200 international entries.
In the field of climate responsive design, the 450-seater auditorium built for Kalakshetra, a centre for performing arts in Chennai is a fine example. Built back in 1980, the structure sans electromechanical interventions except for the audio visual systems & stage lighting, is considered an architectural marvel even today.
His passion for design commitment in practice of green building concepts has resulted in his nomination as Chairman LEED India (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a Program established in India to rate Green Buildings. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power, Govt of India which has initiated the Energy Conservation in Building Code (ECBC) has Mr Raghavendran on their board as an Advisor / Consultant for educating the building community on understanding the ECBC norms.
Mr. Raghavendran has several awards to his credit. These include the IIA (Indian Institute of Architects) Design Excellence Award in 1995, the prestigious Architect of the Year Award in 1996, Paterson Cancer Center Award in 2003. This apart, several Industry Publications such as The Economic Times ACETECH Award 2007, Construction World Top Ten Architects Awards in 2007, 2009 & 2010 have honoured him. His works have been featured in several Foreign & Indian books and Professional Journals. Besides, CRN has been listed by BD World Architecture, a UK based Architectural Publication, as being ranked 4th in list of leading Architectural practices in the Central Asia Region and 97th in list of top 100 practices worldwide.
