Melbourne, Australia (PressExposure) March 03, 2012 -- It has been said that enlightenment is most often found whilst alone by yourself in nature. Now there is a large underground movement that is once again following in the footsteps of the Buddha and again taking time out to be alone within nature to find a sense of spiritual enlightenment.
This new underground movement is again taking to the forests according to the website http://www.davidstyles.com/enlightenment/ and again returning to a spiritual connection with the land.
According to the website there are now thousands of people who now tap into an ancient way of being whilst immersed alone in the forest for 3-4 days. This is apparently the way we used to live whilst living in indigenous cultures because we had a strong connection to the land and also had a strong sense of being whilst connected with nature.
However with today's current society and modernism there appears to be a stark difference between being connected with this ancient way of knowing and being in touch with the spiritual sense of connection to the land.
The experience of enlightenment is supposedly meant to feel like you are connected to everything all at the same time. This is meant to feel like there is a sense of oneness and connection to all living things around you.
It is difficult therefore to say with authority whether this sense of enlightenment actually exists. The reason for this is that it is a qualitative experience and not necessarily one which can be scientifically proven.
However new research into brain wave patterns is suggesting that it is possible to monitor the frequency of subjects brain waves in order to determine whether a state of supposed enlightenment has been achieved or not.
This research is showing that as a person enters more into a spiritual dimension and understanding that their brain wave patterns will actually slow down. For example when people are in the 'beta' problem solving brain wave pattern then they are in a state that is frequently called 'ordinary reality'.
However, as people's brain wave patterns slow down into the 'alpha', 'theta' and 'delta' brain wave patterns then there is a greater sense of oneness and states of enlightenment are often described.
The website touches on this spiritual phenomonen however there is empirical evidence that time spent alone in nature for an extended period of time will naturally slow your brain wave patterns down. That is probably why many of the great spiritual teachers spent time alone by themselves in nature because these appear to be the optimal conditions in which a state of enlightenment is achieved.
