Chapel Hill, North Carolina (PressExposure) August 29, 2009 -- Members of Mission 1:27 at Christ United Methodist Church in Southern Village are headed to Russia this spring. To help defray the costs of travel, Mission 1:27 is holding an enormous yard sale at the church on Saturday, September 12, from 7:30- 11:00 am. Donated items such as gently used childrenâs clothes, furniture, and household goods are needed. Volunteers are also welcome!
Teamed with Childrenâs HopeChest, Mission 1:27 has been sponsoring the Slobodskoi Orphanage outside Kirov for the last two years. At Slobodskoi, children from first through eleventh grade live together and attend school in the nearby village. However, beyond food, shelter and minimal clothing, the Russian state does not provide much for these children.
The outlook for orphans in Russia is grim. The average lifespan for these children is only 28-30 years. Fully 15% commit suicide within two years of leaving the orphanage. 50% abuse drugs and alcohol. Over 60% turn to prostitution or organized crime to survive. Why? Because these children do not know how to live in the real world, and grow up feeling alone and unworthy. Thatâs where Mission 1:27 and Childrenâs HopeChest come in. With our help, these children receive daily prayers, monthly letters letting them know they are valued, and financial support. We also provide two deciplers who visit the orphanage twice a month to give the children personal care and attention and teach them life skills, how to foster healthy relationships with others, how to make good choices in life, and, most importantly, about God and His love.
This past year, the orphanage director reports that thanks to our help, the orphanage was able to provide school supplies, sports and crafts materials, several field trips to help the children understand aspects of living outside the orphanage, and badly needed new furniture. He was also able to update the orphanageâs medical facility, enabling the children to receive the medical care many of the children need desperately.
Our next step is to visit the children in person in the spring. The children are extremely excited to know that the Americans who have been writing them are going to visit. They begged the disciplers until they agreed to offer lessons in English language and culture and the children write that they cannot wait to meet us. We feel the same about them! While we are there, we will have a mini version of Vacation Bible School for the children, as well as one-on-one time to share with each of them. We want to make sure each and every one of these children understands that he or she is loved.
The cost of such a trip is momentous. To help defray the costs, we will be holding several fundraising events in the next few months. The first is the Enormous Yard Sale which will be held on September 12 from 7:30 â 11:00am at Christ United Methodist Church in Southern Village. Volunteers and donation items are welcome!
