Midlothian, VA (PressExposure) June 06, 2009 -- A sprouted grain, high protein full nourishment bread said to be God given to Ezekiel in the 6th-century BC. Even the name, Ezekiel, means "God strengthens". So, it has to be good for you.
Ezekiel Bread is generally seen as a "low carb" bread filled with grains, lentils and beans. There are many modern variations, since the Bible offers no quantities. In Ezekiel 4:9 we get ingredients; wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and bread-corn.
The Judean prophet, exiled in Babylon, was instructed by God to cast them (the grains and beans) into one earthen vessel. Some take that to mean they are to be sprouted and ground. The historical time for Ezekiel was one of very hard times and he was to eat only this bread for 190 days.
Scholars argue about the ingredients. Some suggest spelt was used, a Bronze Age relative of common wheat. Others suggest fitches are called for, a variety of spices, but, this is seen as an error in translation.
Today's recipes range from starting from scratch with organic grain stock from the health store, to Biblical interpretations using earthenware, to convenient premixes available on line. There are prepared loaves available in stores and on-line.
Versions of this bread generally are a very sweet, moist, cake-like complete protein product. Honey, fruit and nuts are worth experimenting with in the mixes and are included in some of the ready made breads. Ezekiel Bread is truly the staff of life, a highly nutritious food from the Bible.
