Ferndale, WA (PressExposure) June 09, 2011 -- The School of Molecular and Biomedical Science at University of Adelaide, Australia finds that the consumption of long-chain n-3 fatty acids (FAs) from fish oil decreases cardiovascular risk and increases metabolic health when combined with exercise, more effectively than either treatment alone.
An active, lean body operates like a well-oiled machine ...and needs nutritional oil to keep operating at a higher metabolic pace. A 2007 Austrailian report in the Journal of Clinical Nutiriution found that participants could reduce their body fat when they combined 1.9 grams of omega-3 fish oil daily with just over two hours of cardiio exercise per week. The participants also lowered their tri-glyceride levels, and raised their favorable HDL cholestoerol level.
The key to making the most out of the body's assimilation of omega fats lies in balance. A control group that performed the same execises as the study group, but had taken a regimen of mostly omega-6 fats (in the form of sunflower oil), almost lost no fat weight at all. However, the omega-3 fats found in fish oil contributed powerfully to sculpting the body.
The two-step process in improving body fat levels by using fatty acids to fight fat requires intentionality: an increase in omega-3s and a decrease in oemga-6s. Increasing omega-3 fish-oil supplements to three to six capsules daily will yield an increase of one to two grams of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). A decrease in omega-6 fatty acids entails limiting the use of most salad fressing, mayonnaises, and other soybean oil products which carry the highest concentrations.
"Omega-3 Fish oil supplementation lowered triacylglycerols, increased HDL cholesterol, and improved endothelium-dependent arterial vasodilation." state Alison M Hill, Jonathan D Buckley, Karen J Murphy and Peter RC Howe in their findings. "Both fish oil and exercise independently reduced body fat. ...Increasing intake could be a useful adjunct to exercise programs aimed at improving body composition and decreasing cardiovascular disease risk."
