Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) September 08, 2009 -- Nancy Garrido, 54, and Phillip Garrido, 58, have been charged with the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991, when the girl was only eleven years old.
Both husband and wife were involved in the raping of Dugard according to a 16 page charge sheet by U.S. prosecutors, filed In California. Dugard, whom they renamed as 'Allissa' was kept for eighteen years as a sex slave, in a pair of run-down sheds.
The Garridos face 29 felony counts, including kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment. The charges reach from the 10th June 1991 to the day 29 year-old Dugard reappeared in public on 26th August 2009. Garrido has admitted to being the father of Dugard's two fairâhaired children, aged 11 and 15.
In the beginning both Garridos denied all charges against them. It now appears however, that Nancy Garrido was the true villain of the crimes, as she allegedly stood by and watched her husband rape Dugard and father the two children.
The police have described the scene as a 'backyard inside a backyard', with only basic bathroom facilities. Isolated from all outside contact, the victim and her children neither attended school, nor were seen by a doctor. It appears the authorities may be dealing with 'Stockholm Syndrome', where the victim bonds with the captor. Dugard had access to the business phone, as well as an email account. She was claimed to be the âcreative forceâ behind Garrido's print shop.
His neighbours described Garrido as a religious fundamentalist, who wished to open up his own church. They were appalled that the prison could go unnoticed for so long. Neighbours had called 911 on November 30, 2006, to report that children were living in Garrido's backyard. Contra Costa County Police admitted that they had been given the tip-off, but hadnât fully followed it up.
Garrido was granted parole in 1988 after serving only 10 years of a 50 year sentence. Questions are now being asked how a registered sex offender, for kidnapping and raping a 25 year-old Californian woman, could be released. Garrido was diagnosed as a sexual deviant and chronic drug abuser. The Garridos were wed while Phillip was serving the prison term.
Garrido said "What's kept me busy the last several years is, I've completely turned my life around, and you're going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim - you wait".
Police are now revisiting the serial murders of ten prostitutes in the 1990's. The incidents took place close to where Phillip Garrido lived and worked.
Dugard was kidnapped on June 10, 1991, by two occupants in a car, right in front of her appalled stepfather, Carl Probyn, who gave chase on a bicycle. He failed to stop the abduction and was a suspect for a long time.
