Libertarians Urge Repeal of Teen Curfew

Boca Raton, FL (PressExposure) August 05, 2009 -- West Palm Beach instituted its teen curfew for parts of its city on the basis that teens were the root cause of crime at City Place and surrounding streets. As time has shown, crime has not been reduced in the area and the ordinance is clearly unconstitutional. We strongly urge the West Palm Beach city government to repeal this unjust ordinance as it is a violation of the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments. Even more interesting is most teen crime happens outside the instituted curfew hours.

Teen curfews have proven ineffective in other areas of the country and often do more harm than good. San Francisco police officers became upset with their teen curfew program as it became a form of "babysitting", used up vital resources, and ultimately dropped the program. San Francisco is one of many cities to drop their teen curfews.

Libertarian Party of Palm Beach County chairman, Karl Dickey, said this morning, "Each hour a police officer spends restricting the rights of an otherwise law abiding teen is an hour not spent on solving burglaries, murders, rapes, and other crimes with actual victims. To support a program that prohibits teens from congregating in a particular area of the city makes as much sense as prohibiting a group of 25-30 year old women from a particular area of the city. The city should not be allowed to continue to paint all teens with the same broad brush."

The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the United States and suggests the only proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected. All efforts by government to redistribute wealth, or to control or manage trade, are improper in a free society.
