Evanston, IL (PressExposure) May 01, 2013 -- Local author, Nathan Thompson, has released his science fiction novella, The Watch in the Sand, for purchase. Starting with events ripped from current headlines, the novella follows a time-line from the near past to the frighteningly close future to explore a possible evolution of mankind.
Thompson explores the repercussions of advances in nanotechnology, healthcare, wireless communication, and their impacts on human behavior. The story begins on October the third, in the year 2055, when two thirds of downtown Chicago suddenly drops dead. With no warning, explanation, or clues, ex-beat cop Jack Reed must quickly piece together what has happened and why, before the truth is buried forever in an avalanche of online user-generated content.
"I started writing the novella about a year and a half ago," Thompson said. "I was constantly being amazed at the number of news stories I was seeing that all seemed to connect: news about Facebook and Twitter, Nanotechnology, new advances in Healthcare; It's clear that once these amazing new technologies are common, we will then have to shift how we define ourselves."
"With the growing list of new tech toys appearing on the market and in the news, at some point we have to stop and examine our role in this world we are creating," Thompson said. "iPads, Smart-phones, Google glasses, Apple watches - the world is becoming more and more digitized every day. The internet is no longer a toy or a luxury, but a utility as necessary as water and gas. This novella gives an answer to the question that has been pressing me for years: What will happen to the society we have, when everyone is unavoidably connected through our technology?"
The Watch in the Sand has been compared by readers to the works of Asimov, Lovecraft, Bradbury, and Heinlein, and it is now available for purchase on Smashwords.com, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the iStore for 1.99 $US.
