The UN's upcoming climate conference in Copenhagen has put this debate on the agenda, and many companies now have their full focus on the issue of carbon dioxide emission (CO2). In the past months, many companies have stated their efforts in these areas, and many seminars and conferences have been held with focus on ideas on how to reduce emissions.
In the future, such initiatives will drive development. Many companies around the world can make a difference and help the climate by introducing new climate-saving technologies and production methods. And they can implement these technologies to reduce their own carbon dioxide emission.
Companies also need to take social responsibility, no matter if you are a small or large company. It won't necessarily cost you a lot, on the contrary, many initiatives can end up with a profit. This alone involves an awful lot of CO2 emmisions, so by simply reducing the amount of prints, all companies will be part of reducing the global heating. A small thing, but collectively it has a big effect.
Let me try to give an example: WebProof.com has been way ahead for many years, and now WebProof takes yet another step forward! We have stopped our emission of carbon!
Last year - in 2008 - 4 million pages were proof-read and approved online through WebProof.com, and as an average of 3 people are involved in this process, the outcome was a reduction of 12 million printed pages! A calculation of the ressource consumption connected to proof printing includes:
* electricity, water and wood on the paper factory * electricity to produce printers and toner * electricity and toner for the printers onsite at company facilities * transportation of paper from factory to customer * shipping * transportation to incineration plants or re-use facilities * Incineration of the paper
Calculations show, that 1500 trees are used to produce the paper, and the sum of this along with transportation and print-process consumption would have caused emissions of not less than 300.000 kg CO2.*
Reduction of CO2: By using WebProof and online proof-reading, the process is cut down by minimum 25%, and the number of printed proofs is reduced, which means that power consumption is cut back in all involved areas.
More reduction: As the full online proof-reading process is centralized and hosted by WebProof, there's no emission of carbon dioxide, because WebProof only uses electricity from windmills, both in the company office and in the server facilities.
Furthermore WebProof plants one tree per customer every month. For a 1,000 customers, this ends up with 120,000 trees over a 10 year period. This equals planting of approximately 600 house sites every year.
