Modelling Exhibition Will Inspire Young to Give it a Go, Says Models Direct

England, United Kingdom (PressExposure) May 29, 2009 -- One of the fantastic things about careers in modelling is that they create opportunities for all kinds of different personalities to shine, says Damian O’Connor. And nothing shows that better that a new exhibition, called Model As Muse, opening at New York's Metropolitan Museum. O’Connor is Managing Director of Models Direct, one of the UK’s largest modelling agencies.

The exhibition, which celebrates the long and colourful history of fashion modelling, explores the lives and work of many of history’s best known models, the different paths they took to become a model, and the changing ways in which society views and celebrates the role of the model.

If there’s one lesson to be learned from the show, says O’Connor, it’s that over the years, women who have chosen modelling careers have been highly motivated, successful individuals with confidence and plenty of passion for their work.

While the early days of fashion modelling saw women acting as little more than living mannequins, the post-WWII era saw the resurgence of glamour and the rise of big personalities such as Lisa Fonssagrives and Suzy Parker, who was the first model to demand more than $100 an hour – a lot of money at the time.

Of course the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s saw increasing sophistication, massive shifts in style, and the rise of the superstar model, from Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton in the 1960s to the ‘supermodels’ of the 1980s. Women like Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington reputably wouldn’t leave the house for less than $10000 a day.

“This exhibition is fascinating because it shows just how much the modelling industry and the fashion industry have changed over the years, and also how some things will always stay the same,” says O’Connor. “No matter what the style of the day, a great model needs to enjoy what they do and have a great attitude to their work.”
