Each year millions of women are prescribed antidepressants for the symptoms of depression, when in actuality their bodies are in dire need of estrogen and/or progesterone. The Journal of Reproductive Medicine states that in a statistical study of depressed women interviewed in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, 41% are admitted on the day before or the first day of menses.

"Estrogen deficiency causes depression," says Uzzi Reiss, M.D., OB/GYN, author of The Natural Superwoman. "When estrogen levels dip down at any stage of life or as a consequence of the natural fluctuation of their monthly cycles, many women often report that they feel depressed, flat, uninspired, and hopeless." Dr. Uzzi goes on to say, "Unfortunately, it is far more common for a woman to receive a quick prescription for antidepressants than a suggestion that she address her hormone levels."

Psychiatrist Stephen Stahl, of the University of California--San Diego, suggests that, "Women who are taking antidepressants need to have adequate levels of estrogen before they can respond to the drugs." He goes on to say, "Thus in some women when being treated with antidepressants and not responding, low estrogen levels may be one reason for the lack of response."

According to Uzzi Reiss, M.D., OB/GYN, "from the time a girl begins her first menstrual cycle and up until and during and even after menopause, she will be susceptible to hormonal depression."

Author, freelance writer, and medical researcher, London Tracy, says she endured terrible premenstrual depression for many years before she learned she was estrogen deficient. Since discovering the magical powers of bioidentical hormones, she is a new woman and can confidently say it literally saved her life. In an effort to offer hope to women who might be suffering unnecessarily with depression, she is releasing her new book, For Women Only, A Novel Approach to Depression in Women.

Though there are many causes for depression in women, For Women Only, A Novel Approach to Depression in Women aims to bring attention to the most common cause--hormonal imbalance.

For Women Only, A Novel Approach to Depression in Women is published by New Hope Books (978-1477600566/$8.95) and is available at
