Pilates For The Body And Mind

, VT (PressExposure) June 23, 2009 -- Modern life along with advances made in technology have conspired to lower the level of physical activity we are required to do every day. A sedentary lifestyle is implicated in an increased risk of cancer, osteoporosis, weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, back problems, insomnia, erectile dysfunction and depression.

Several excellent books on the topic of exercise and health have recently been published: “Younger Next Year” by Chris Crowley and Henry Lodge “Spark” (This is a fascinating book about the power of exercise on the brain.) “The Blue Zones” ( A book about four areas in the world where people live past 100)

Pilates Plus is a studio that incorporates Pilates exercises along with the latest research on the benefits of exercise. We need 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day. You choose: 30 minutes going for a walk, jumping on a small trampoline or rebounder, going for a swim, riding a bike, walking on a treadmill, using an elliptical machine. Your heart doesn’t care what you do as long as you huff and puff a bit for 30 minutes. We also need resistance training. Your muscles need to be used. That old saying, “use it or lose it” is really true. If you don’t use your muscles, they just shrivel up and atrophy. Not only is this painful, but it is also part of the process of osteoporosis. Pilates exercises are a wonderful way to strengthen your muscles. Pilates exercises strengthen your “core”. Why is your “core” important? Just think about your body for a minute. You have a rib cage on top and you have a pelvis underneath it. There is not much holding those two body parts together. Yes, there is a spinal column but that is not particularly strong. It is the muscles of the “core” that hold the trunk of our body together. At Pilates Plus, it is my mission to make your core muscles strong.

It takes 6 weeks to effect a physiological change in the body. It is important to make a 6 week commitment when starting a new exercise program. Do not give up before your body has a chance to adapt.
