Professional Czech Cyclist Roman Kreuziger Pulls Off a Stunning First-Place Upset at the Amstel Gold Race

London, United Kingdom (PressExposure) April 25, 2013 -- At the recently concluded Amstel Gold Race, a one-day cycling competition held in the Netherlands, a cycling outsider became a celebrated insider after finishing the race in an unprecedented first place. 26-year-old Czech cyclist Roman Kreuziger has beaten the odds and defeated many odds-on favourites to claim victory at the Amstel Gold Race. Among the established racers that Kreuziger bested included eventual second-placer Peter Sagan, Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde, and Australian racer Simon Gerrans who completed the remaining slots.

Other cyclists who competed in the Amstel Gold Race included the likes of Belgian racers Philipe Gilbert and Bjorn Leukemans, Polish cyclist Michal Kwiatkowski, Italian roadster Enrico Gasparotto, Columbian racer Segio Henao, and Dutchman Pieter Weening. All men had to settle for less impressive finishes, while Kreuziger pushed his limits and conquered the race, securing him the win. Others weren't as lucky to have even crossed the finish line as cyclists Thomas Voeckler and Joaqium Rodriguez both had to bow out of the race due to sustained injuries.

Though he might have won the race, Kreuziger's finish was a close call, as he was a nail-biting 22 seconds ahead of Sagan. Still, the victory was one for the history books in the world of road cycling, as he is the first Czech rider to earn a first-place finish in the 48-year history of the Amstel Gold Race. Speaking to a gaggle of reporters after his landmark triumph, Kreuziger remarked, "It was a big surprise but the team was excellent today and I'm really happy to take the crown from my friend Enrico Gasparotto who won last year."

Pain, sweat, and tears marked Kreuziger's journey throughout the grueling course as he endured a physically taxing climb that trumped his fellow peers. He admits he was barely even aware of his astonishing pace that blew other racers out of the dirt road until he was at the final stretch of the race's track. Kreuziger notes of that decisive moment that landed him his biggest accomplishment to date by saying, "I could only hear the people call my name on the final climb and I gave it my best. I knew I had 20 seconds going over the top and so I thought I could do it."
