Fargo, ND (PressExposure) August 31, 2012 -- Intelligent InSites, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise real-time location systems (RTLS) software for healthcare systems, has announced that the RFID in Health Care 2012 conference, organized by RFID Journal, will feature a presentation discussing the largest RTLS implementation in healthcare to date.
The event, taking place on September 6, 2012, in Boston, MA, will focus on educating healthcare providers about how real-time location systems (RTLS) and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies are helping leading hospitals and healthcare facilities to improve patient care and operations.
RFID in Health Care will feature leading hospital executives discussing how they use RTLS and RFID to improve asset utilization rates, reduce expenses, and improve patient outcomes, and will provide a unique learning experience for healthcare attendees. Presenters will share the results of real-world deployments, and answer questions regarding the benefits they have achieved from deploying RTLS and RFID systems.
Among the speakers is Michael McDonald, VA VISN 11 biomedical engineering POC of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Veterans in Partnership (VISN11) Healthcare Network, which serves veterans in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
The deployment at VISN 11 is being called the largest such RTLS installation to date--with over 439,000 individually-tracked items. Once completed, it will include 25,000 active RTLS tags, 94,000 passive RFID tags, and 2,000 wireless temperature and humidity sensors, and will cover a combined total of approximately 4.5 million square feet. The system also includes bar codes etched on 255,000 surgical instruments, as well as passive RFID tags for the 63,000 cardiac catheterization lab supplies consumed annually by the seven medical centers of VISN 11.
Specific goals for the RTLS deployment at VISN 11 include decreasing operational costs, maximizing equipment utilization, minimizing lost and misplaced items, increasing clinical efficiencies and staff productivity, improving staff satisfaction, and reducing delays in patient care--all resulting in increased healthcare efficiency and improved quality of veteran care.
The prime contractor and systems integrator for the VISN 11 RTLS program is Hewlett-Packard (HP) Enterprise Services. HP provides the overall program management for the implementation process and is responsible for ongoing training, support, and maintenance.
To provide an intuitive and accessible solution for VA caregivers, VISN 11 sought an RTLS solution with a single, unified user interface capable of supporting all of the identified RTLS use cases. Intelligent InSites, a strategic HP partner for the VISN 11 RTLS program, is delivering this single, unified user experience, including end-user RTLS software applications for asset management, temperature monitoring, and business intelligence. The unified user interface also includes WaveMark's consumable asset tracking solution, featuring RFID-enabled smart cabinets, and Censis Technologies' Censitrac surgical instrument tracking solution. In addition, the Intelligent InSites' RTLS software platform provides the integrations for Tempsys' CheckPoint temperature monitoring solution, VA's Automated Engineering Management System /Medical Equipment Reporting System (AEMS/MERS), and VA's Active Directory.
VISN 11 selected multiple RTLS hardware solutions to provide real-time data to Intelligent InSites' RTLS software, including Wi-Fi-based RTLS from AeroScout and Ekahau, Gen2IR/RFID technology from CenTrak, active RFID/IR technology from RF Code, ZigBee-based RTLS from Skytron and Awarepoint, ultrasound-based RTLS from Sonitor, and various passive RFID technologies.
According to Trevor Gruby, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Intelligent InSites, "Our open architecture design enables the Intelligent InSites software to work with any RTLS technology, providing our customers with maximum flexibility for their desired use cases, environments, and requirements. This flexibility, combined with the scalability of the Intelligent InSites RTLS software platform, provides a future-proof foundation for sustainable improvements to VA health care processes."
During the RFID in Health Care 2012 conference, in addition to attending presentations and expert panels, healthcare providers can visit an exhibit area showcasing the latest RTLS and RFID solutions for the healthcare industry, including enterprise real-time location systems (RTLS) software from Intelligent InSites.
