Rising Above Poverty, A Community Project in Thailand

Phrao, Thailand (PressExposure) September 18, 2015 -- Nestled in the foothills of Northern Thailand is a small community called Phrao. Scattered throughout the surrounding mountains are many Hill Tribe villages.

If you have ever had the chance to visit Thailand, Phrao is just a short distance away in kilometers from the big bustling city of Chiang Mai, but worlds away from modern-day technology.

Poorest District

Known as one of the poorest districts in Thailand, the people of Phrao are working towards raising their community out of poverty. Community development is spearheaded by a non-profit organization, Warm Heart Worldwide.

Together they are defining issues and finding solutions. Education is a key factor in resolving most problems.

One of their main projects is focused on the children.

Education Opportunity

Children living in the Hill Tribe villages have no access to education. They are isolated from the world outside their village by language barriers; each Hill Tribe has their own language.

Survival is a daily struggle in these poor villages. Children often end up the brunt of the despair, sometimes being abandoned.

Three young boys, A, B, and C, were found abandoned in the middle of a rice field. A, the oldest, was trying to take care of his two younger brothers. Fortunately the poor farmer who found them knew where to take these boys.

Loving Environment

Warm Heart has opened three homes for children in need of a safe and loving environment.

The children are given the opportunity to learn Thai, the local language, and attend public school. Warm Heart provides the support they need to succeed.

The homes provide sanctuary for around 40 children. But there are more children in need.

Working with local public schools, 18 more children have been able to be placed in a semi-residential school. While most children attending this school go home for the weekends, their kids have no place to go and remain at the school.

Weekend caretakers watch after the children, providing additional help with their Thai and tutoring in English.

Small Organization, Huge Impact

The program is a small Mom and Pop grassroots organization. Dedicated and talented volunteers make up the bulk of the force behind their success. Volunteers spend 3 to 6 months filling crucial roles to help keep the program growing and thriving.

The children are all succeeding. Three are currently in college and pursuing dreams they never thought they could never achieve. They are beacons of light for all the children living in the homes, showing that miracles can happen.
