Roadside Affairs on Agenda Reveals Survey

Lightwater, United Kingdom (PressExposure) July 08, 2009 -- • 1 in 6 drivers confess that they would like an illicit fling at a service station while 1 in 20 say they have had such an encounter • North West and Midlands place most like to see service station affairs • 6 out of 10 motorists reckon prices are too high and 2 of every 10 say toilets are unclean • 53% spend more if children are in car with them

Fine summer weather is encouraging UK holidaymakers to take to the road this summer and a new survey has shown that that 1 in 6 motorists like the prospect of having a deceitful romantic encounter at a service station – while 1 in 20 say that they already have.

The research was conducted by market leading car hire comparator and polled opinions from more than 2,300 motorists. Price was the main gripe people have with service stations and another factor was that toilets are unclean. However many drivers admitted that they also think about having a fling when at a service station.

Most regular destinations in the country for extramarital activity were shown to be the Midlands and the North West followed by London and the South East. Those drivers most likely to stray are aged between 36 and 45.

Gareth Robinson, managing director of car hire website, said: “Some surprising outcomes were revealed from our research, not least that many people see motorway services as the place to conduct illicit romantic encounters.”

Expensive food and drink was the leading grievance among motorists, with almost 60% saying that prices in services are too high. Also mentioned was the fact that toilets are not clean enough and that food sold is of a poor quality.

Over half of respondents, 53%, said that the amount of money they spend when visiting a motorway services varies between £26 and £50, though this alters when they take the kids with them. Women spend more on top of petrol than men do.

Gareth Robinson went on: “Lots of UK tourists are staying in the country this year so that means more use of the motorways. Our advice to combat high prices at service stations is to buy your food and drinks before you hit the road.” compares car hire deals and prices from up to 35 hire providers, including Alamo, Holiday Autos, Sixt and Thrifty in over 9,000 locations worldwide.
