Single Party Rule Comes To An End In India

Jaipur, India (PressExposure) April 17, 2009 -- Thiruvananthapuram. Reiterating that the era of single party rule has ended in the country, Defence Minister and senior Congress leader A K Antony today made it clear that Congress would accept support from all political parties to keep communal forces at bay.

Talking to newspersons, after exercising his franchise here, Mr Antony said Congress would emerge as the single largest party after the 15th Lok Sabha elections.

Asked whether the Congress would accept the support of the CPI(M), he said the Congress would accept support from all political parties to form a secular government at the Centre.

The Minister also expressed the hope that all political parties, who wished to keep away the communal forces from the power, would extent their support to the Congress.

Mr Antony expressed confidence that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) would make a ``clean sweep`` in all the 20 constituencies in the State and avenge its defeat to the LDF in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

The first phase of the election to the Lok Sabha was a good beginning to the Congress and it would bolster the morale of the the Congress-led UPA at the national level, the Minister claimed and added that the State would be a model to all the other States in the country.

Pointing out that the situation was quite favourable to the UDF in the State, Mr Antony said the enthusiasm of the people in the State showed that they are confident of the performance dished out by the Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the policies of the UPA government.
