Chicago, IL (PressExposure) August 03, 2011 -- The City of South Houston Senior Center is enhancing the health of its seniors with the Stronger Seniors® Chair Exercise Program. Fitness Instructor Kelly Williams leads the program.
The Stronger Seniors® Chair Exercise Program is based on both Basic and Functional fitness. Basic fitness includes Cardiovascular (Aerobic), Strength (Resistance), Stretching (Ranging of Motion), and Balance.
Functional Fitness is an overlooked but important element of exercise for Seniors. Functional Fitness includes Breathing, Core Strength, Posture and Coordination.
The Stronger Seniors® Chair Exercise Program was designed in 2003 by Anne Pringle Burnell. Ms Burnell is an instructor at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and an educator the renowned Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She also teaches over 100 seniors per week in group classes at the Center for Life and Learning in Chicago.
Ms. Burnell has been a special guest instructor at resorts throughout the U.S. and Caribbean, and a presenter at several health-related events including the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll. She has been a Faculty Presenter for National Council on Aging/American Society of Aging conference in 2007 and 2010.
The Stronger Seniors® Chair Exercise Program is practiced in over 150 Senior and Community Centers, hospital-based health centers, and independent and assisted living communities across the U.S. and Canada.
There has been a strong increased the program's participation in the past two years, as senior institutions recognized the preventative affects that have on the health of the elderly populations.
The City of South Houston Senior Center is primarily a nutrition site where lunches are served Monday through Friday, both at the Center and to the homebound. The only requirement for joining the Senior Center is that the resident, or spouse, be at least sixty (60) years of age or more.

Stronger Seniors® is a chair based exercise program for seniors and those with chronic illness. The program includes workshops for fitness professionals that are approved for continuing education credits by the American Council on Exercise and the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America.
The program is also available on five DVDs- Stretch & Strength, Core Fitness, Core Strength, and Chair Yoga.
