Top K-9 Police Dogs Get Their Week in the Limelight

Sacramento, CA (PressExposure) May 19, 2009 -- Every night, K-9 police dogs patrol the streets of Sacramento, chasing suspects out of backyards, sniffing out drugs, and preventing those who are under suspicion from escaping. They work long hours for the excitement of the job. These dogs need their dog day in the limelight.

Eight police dog contestants are vying for the title of Sacramento Top K-9 Police Dog, a contest created by MDM (Million Dollar Memory), Inc. ( Each dog is very unique.

• Buck works with the SWAT team of Sacramento Police Dept. • Ike participates in search and rescue teams for the Sacramento County Sheriff Dept. • Seico worked for the Vallejo Police Dept. and knows German. • Eddy and his K-9 buddies at Folsom Police Dept. visit children in the hospital. • Clint is the runt of the bunch, size-wise, at the Sac Sheriffs K-9 Dept. • Rex, a Sac Sheriff dog, loves working out his neck muscles by carrying around a log on his spare time and loves peanut butter. • Rocky scares criminals sitting in the backseat of the Sac Sheriff police car when he jumps up and opens the door himself. • Jesse is a certified drug sniffer for the Sacramento County Sheriff Dept.

Videos of the contestants along with some of their stories can be found on the website, [] The contest, starting in 2007, took 2 years to launch. During that time, a few of the dogs got tired… and some retired.

“We’re asking the public to vote for their favorite K-9 dog. The contest is a way to bring awareness to the great job that these dogs and their handlers do,” said Donna Schwontkowski, Event Coordinator.

The contest has received a lot of support from businesses in the community that want to honor these K-9 partners. The sponsor list includes Petco, Old Monterey Inn, Printable Memories, Coffee Creek Dude Ranch, Peticure, Z-Medica, Health & Fitness Magazine, and several others mentioned on the Top Dog Contest website. Many of the sponsors are also assisting in fundraising. The ultimate goal is to raise enough money to purchase climate-control devices for the K-9 police cars, and another K-9 dog for the winning department.

Prizes will be awarded to the top K-9 dogs and their handlers. Voters will receive free email training in how to identify and remember Sacramento’s ‘Bad Girls’ and ‘Bad Boys’ and a free heart-warming ebook about a missing dog, Finding Miss Tilly and the Golden Thread. Voters are also eligible to win unique sponsor-donated and life-saving prizes. Voting starts Saturday, May 16th.

Help back the silent heroes of the community with a mention of the contest or a guest appearance of a few K-9 dogs and their handlers, The event coordinator is also available to show and explain the prizes and fundraising efforts.
