University of Texas

, Texas (PressExposure) April 29, 2009 -- Playing in a state that is rich in football tradition, it is hard to argue that the Texas Longhorns are the most famous of all the teams in this state. Texas football is more important to many Texans than anything else, and the Texas Longhorns are the epicenter of this importance. The Texas Longhorns are famous for their burnt orange colors and over the years they have burnt many teams with their athleticisms and toughness. The Texas Longhorns have been a college football mainstay since the mid 1960's and are a legitimate national title threat almost every season.

Texas football began playing football in 1893 and has enjoyed a relatively great amount of success since its inception. The team however did not come into national prominence until the 1960's when they were lead by legendary head coach Darrel Royal, who led the team to three national championships in the span of 7 years and enjoyed great successes in conference play during his twenty-year career at the helm of the Texas Longhorn program. In fact at one point the team won six conference titles in a row from 1968 to 1973.

When Royal left the program in 1976 the team suffered a lot of bad seasons and was unable to regain the success they had attained in the 60's and 70's. However, in 1998 the team signed up and coming head coach Mack Brown from the University of North Carolina. The team has become one of the most successful programs under Brown with countless Top Ten finishes and over an 80% winning percentage during Brown's tenure as head coach.

During the 2006 season, Texas had its best season in over thirty years and they won their conference title and competed for the national title against the heavily favored USC Trojans in USC's backyard the Rose Bowl. However, this tenacious Texas team would not just lie down and fought back against USC and won led by Vince Young to win its first national championship in thirty-five years. This game is remembered as one of the best college football games every played and re-established Texas as one of the elite teams in the nation with its gutsy performance.

Besides being a highly successful football program, Texas is also known for their intense rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners. This rivalry is dubbed the Red River Shootout and is played every year at a neutral site in Dallas. The game between these two teams usually is an elimination game for the national title race and a game that every fan of each team looks forward to all year. Texas leads the overall series, however, Oklahoma has dominated the series in recent years and this had led many to doubt the effectiveness of Mack Brown to get the job done. Even with national championships to their name, the season always comes down to the matchup against Oklahoma.
