Virginia Tech

, Virgina (PressExposure) June 09, 2009 -- The Virginia Tech Hokies have been a widely successful football program since Frank Beamer took over as head coach and introduced his own style of football. Coach Beamer's style of football has been dubbed Beamer Ball by fans and sports journalists alike. Frank Beamer took over the team in 1987 and has been there ever since. He will be entering his 23rd season with the team in the 2009 season.

Beamer took a program that had been mediocre at best and has turned it into one of the most respected teams in all of college football and is a perennial contender for a conference championship, as well as the national championship. During his time at Virginia Tech, Beamer has compiled a 198-105-4 record, which puts him third for most victories by active coaches trailing only Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

The few first years for the former Virginia Tech cornerback were tough; however Beamer was starting from scratch as the team had no stars when he took over the team. Beamer began to hit the recruiting trail and getting players from Virginia to look at Virginia Tech as opposed to the more popular University of Virginia. He was not only using the fact that the school was starting to rebuild the football program but showed it on the field by emphasizing Beamer ball. Beamer ball is putting as much effort into scoring on defense and special teams as is done on offense. It has worked as well, as a player on defense and special teams has scored a touchdown during every season that Beamer has coached the team and also every position on defense has scored a touchdown during his tenure.

After a rough start, the team turned around and in 1993 they were able to go to a bowl game for the first time in many years and have been to the postseason every year since. They are one of only three teams to go to a bowl game every year in that time span, with the other two being Florida and Florida State. During that span they have won six conference titles with three of those coming in the Big East conference and three coming in the Atlantic Coast conference. The team also played in the national championship game following the 1999 season led by sensational quarterback Michael Vick. The team played strong in the national championship game against Florida State before succumbing to the speed of Florida State and losing 46-29. However, the Virginia Tech program would go the four more BCS games following the disappointing loss and is a force to be reckoned with in the college football landscape.

The team had a tough job in the 2007 season as they were coming off an offseason in which a shooting occurred on campus that took the lives of many students. Many of the players saw it as their responsibility to help the school forget about the horrific incident and dedicated the season to those that passed in the shooting. The team playing with heavy hearts was able to return to the ACC Championship game and beat Boston College in a rematch of an earlier game in the season which they had lost. Many people involved with the Virginia Tech program see this as the best season in school history factoring in the fact that many players and fans were shaken by what occurred just a few months earlier. The team was an inspiration to many fans and alumni and was able to allow the healing process to start and make them forget about the horrific incidents every Saturday when the team took the field.
