Web 2.0 Gossip Web Site, Gossipcraze.Com Stirs Up Some Juicy Campus Concerns

Usa, (PressExposure) October 17, 2008 -- Campus gossip just got a Web 2.0 facelift.

Gossipcraze.com a Web 2.0 gossip web site that allows college students to quickly up-load funny photos, embarrassing videos and anonymous messages about their campus secrets, teachers, and one another has raised some eyebrows among the college community.

From the website’s about us page: “Gossip Craze is a Free Web 2.0 Portal designed for entertainment and fun. A free place to add and browse your latest gossip, news, celebrity rumours, paparazzi photos, videos, community secrets, scandals, funny pictures, and much more.

We wanted to create a place for fun, local and celebrity news, so we created Gossip Craze”

Some of the posts on the site are about “who puts on the best parties” and “whose parents are the wealthiest,” which “students have slept with the teachers and so on.

One recent student, who asked to remain anonymous, said she found some photos of herself when she previously appeared in a topless photo shoot. At first she laughed and then soon realized there could be consequences later in life.

"I thought it was funny at first," she said, "but then I realized that sometimes people want to forget the past and move on."

The site has caused some concern among some university officials. The administrators so far have been reluctant to take any action, preferring to leave the decision to students and teens that use the site.

Many of gossipcraze.com protesters - such as schoolteachers, administrators and professors - are too “old school” to completely understand the Web 2.0 Internet experience and what it has to offer.

“Schools, colleges, campuses, universities and trade schools can benefit from the free online advertising and hype created on the portal about the good, bad and ugly truth about the campus,” said Mandy Smith – Gossipcraze.com Marketing Manager

"The Internet has evolved as an online place to share, pictures of friends, interesting party pictures, candid photos, and funny videos; it (the Internet) has become a Web 2.0 place to have good clean fun and entertainment. It's a very different generation nowadays. Everyone wants to have fun and make the online experience more enjoyable,” she said.

Some psychology department professors have said its impact could be "devastating." The impact of such website like gossipcraze.com could be detrimental to students' self-esteem and may lead to emotional stress.

Although most college students are adult enough to handle many of the personal attacks they may find on the site, everyone, regardless of age, can be vulnerable to hurtful words.

Web 2.0 sites like gossipcraze.com seem popular because they appeal to people on three fronts: fun, entertainment and voyeurism.

Students can add gossip in a few simple steps, they type in a “gossip title”, and then add the campus they want as the “gossip category” because of the “smart” programming of the Web 2.0 site the gossip is searchable from the google search engine.

"Gossipcraze is simply a Web 2.0 experience for freedom of speech," Gossipcraze Marketing Manager said.

"I think everyone using the Web 2.0 gossip site and of course people reading, and watching the site, soon realizes that what they're reading is simply unsubstantiated gossip. No reasonable person is going to believe everything they read on a site like Gossipcraze; it is simply a site much the same as the well known Celebrity gossip sites such as prezhilton.com."
