Shenzhen, China (PressExposure) August 10, 2009 -- Wii Sports Resort, the critically-acclaimed follow up to the evergreen Wii launch title, is quickly becoming a commercial success as well.
Whether due to the addictive new sports, the WiiMotion Plus pack-in, or that gosh danged Nintendo Blue Ocean strategy (or likely a combination of all three), it's clear that Wii Sports Resort is set to mimic the sales chart of its mighty predecessor.
The cold facts, if you prefer:
- About a week after launch, Nintendo revealed that NA gamers picked up 500,000 copies of the new game.
- Europeans followed suit, purchasing 600,000 copies as of latest reports.
- Combine those numbers with MediaCreate's sales figures for Japan (828,000 copies), and the worldwide total is closing in on two million.
Not that anyone is much surprised: the original Wii Sports is cruising along at roughly 50 million (!) copies sold, making it the best-selling videogame of all time. Compare that with #2 Super Mario Bros. and #3 Tetris, at a paltry 40 and 35 million, respectively.
So... wow. Wii Sports Resort has an impossibly high bar to aspire to, but it certainly appears to be off to a good start.
