Port Vila, Vanuatu (PressExposure) August 04, 2009 -- When nearly full-term babies are ripped from their mother's womb, it thrusts kidnapping into a completely different perspective.
The landlord of a small apartment building in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States, discovered the mutilated body of a mother of three wrapped in bedding, when he went to investigate a bad smell in one of his apartments.
Eight months pregnant, Darlene Haynes 23, happened to be the unfortunate ex-neighbour of Julie Corey 35 and her partner Alex Dion 27.
After Dion broke off the relationship with Corey in October last year, Corey told him she was pregnant. The couple had been dating on and off for two years. Corey was desperate to salvage the relationship. At some point Corey came up with the morbid plan to get hold of their neighbour's unborn child.
Corey told Dion she was taking their friend, Darlene Haynes, the victim, to the local shopping centre. Corey telephoned Dion several times that night telling him her water had broken and she had gone into labour. She finally phoned Dion to say she had given birth to a baby girl.
"I am so confused", Dion said during an interview. "I don't know what to think. I thought I had a brand-new daughter".
Corey had gone to Haynes apartment and killed her. She slit open Haynes stomach and inexpertly retrieved the eight month old fetus. Corey tied the umbilical cord with a ribbon, before pushing Haynes into a closet.
Neighbours were used to hearing fighting and screaming coming from the apartment that Haynes had shared with her boyfriend, until just recently. Haynes had placed a restraining order against Roderiquez. Neighbours said Haynes had become very lonely and depressed.
Corey told her friends she had only 20 minutes of labour and was able to return home from the hospital just five hours later. Corey's friends were skeptical. Pretending to breast feed the baby underneath a blanket, Corey in fact used a bottle of baby formula.
Haynes was known by Corey and Dion through her estranged boyfriend, Roberto Rodriguez, who is the father of her 18 month old daughter. Haynes two other children aged 5 and 3, are being cared for by Haynes mother.
Workers in a homeless shelter, where Corey and the baby were, become suspicious of Corey's lack of information about the 1.8 k baby. Corey is being held on a $US 2 million bail, after being arrested at the homeless shelter.
There have been several other incidents involving women cutting a nearly full-term baby from the mother's womb.
