In December, when Haney did not defend himself against Javier Fortuna, the WBC designated him as “champion in recess.” Later, Haney appealed and he was reinstated back. which suggests, the pandemic worked in his favor.
Haney was lately seen defeating Yuriorkis Gamboa in November. He realizes what Gamboa brings to the table and further strategizes removing all the large names until he’s famed as the best lightweight in the world.
Haney appreciated Gamboa during a news conference mentioning, “ Yuriorkis strength isn’t to be underestimated. He’s been one among the competent names and has been within the ring with giants.” He even mentioned he’s not taking him lightly.
Haney says, there are big fights to return. He has some terrific names at the highest like Teofemo Lopez, Grvonta Danis, and Ryan Garcia.
The fight with Garcia is predicted the foremost. Garcia won the vacant WBC lightweight title with a left-hand body shot while defeating the 33-year-old Campbell down. Whereas Haney is unbroken with an ideal record of 25-0 and has held the WBC lightweight title since 2019.
The fight against Garcia would add up and can be an excellent fight to form. Haney could stay within the game for long and if he just maintains his winning consistency, the respect, praise, and applause from his fans will eventually come.
